Preventative Patrols, What Are They And Why Private Security Firms Need To Make Them A Priority?

Of all the roles that a security guard plays, preventative patrols are perhaps the most important. But what is a preventative or private patrol? Why is essential to keeping clients’ sites safe? These are some of the questions that we will be tackling in this feature.

So, first things first, what is a preventative patrol?

Private security firms, have to ensure that the property under guard remains safe. That includes guards making rounds through the property to ensure that there are no malfunctioning systems or cases of vandalism taking place on the site. These rounds are what are called preventative patrols. A patrol typically takes place at predetermined intervals which can be carried out by unarmed or armed security. A security personnel uses a pre-determined route to ensure that each section is secure. In the past, those rounds could go unmonitored but these days there are security patrol solutions that can help both clients and private security firms know whether or not a security officer went on patrol. Guardso is one such security patrol solution. With its geo-tagged route, the app helps these parties know which security officers went on their preventative patrols. Guards can use this app by scanning QR codes at given locations along their private patrol route.

Why are Preventative Patrols Important?

There are three reasons why having your guards go on preventative patrols is crucial. Firstly, preventative patrols are meant to prevent certain incidences from occurring as the name implies. For instance, checking for unusual activity could help an unarmed or armed security guard prevent a break-in or theft. Preventative patrols are also reactive in nature. Security officers may not be able to prevent accidents or thefts, but while on these patrols, they could contain these situations. A guard could apprehend a suspect or steer employees out of a building with a hazard. During a preventative patrol, a pro-active security guard can play a crucial role in mitigating any impending danger. Remember, the basic principle of safety is to anticipate a threat and prevent it before any damage is caused.

Security industry is all about preventing crisis rather than damage control. Every security guard company has to make it a priority and make sure the patrol schedules are complied to.

Preventative patrols are most important part of a security service but often the guards tend get lazy or ignorant when patrolling a peaceful site if the manager does not use a supervisory system to track their on-site performance. This tends to be ignored on both the ends but shouldn’t be.

Preventive patrolling is mainly aimed at increasing the visibility of the security officers to ensure the safety of the post site. Predetermined routes are used to ensure that each section is secure.
